News and EventsBelow are details of some of the things that we have already been involved with. If you saw us at the Royal Cornwall Show or attended one of our other events - why not let us know what you thought - what did you like best? What did you think that we could do better? We would love to hear from you, use the details on the right. KELLY'S OF CORNWALL FULLY SUPPORTS CLEAN CORNWALLKelly's of Cornwall are in full support of Clean Cornwall's ambitions to make Cornwall the Cleanest County in the United Kingdom. They are sponsoring the Clean Cornwall Car Litter Bags that are being given out from various garages on the main roads across Cornwall, and their car litter bag even featured on a recent edition of 'Top Gear'!!! Kelly's have kindly sponsored twenty thousand car litter bags to date, and the idea behind the bags is to help reduce the 30% of car users who currently throw litter out of their cars whilst travelling around Cornwall. Thank you Kelly's, and nice to have you on board!! HAVE YOU SEEN THE CLEAN CORNWALL EVENTS TRAILER YET?The Clean Cornwall Events Trailer has been travelling across Cornwall attending some of the shows and events being held throughout the summer. It has proved extremely popular with all of you, and not only is it handing out various freebies, the people on the trailer are able to help with any litter queries you may have. There are also the famous Clean Cornwall talking litter bins, which provide lots of laughs for everyone. Janet Spreadborough is currently co-ordinating the events calendar for the trailer, and if you are organising an event, such as a steam fair, or summer show, why not contact Janet on the info@cleancornwall.org address to see if the trailer can come along as well. WESTERN POWER SUPPORTING CLEAN CORNWALL- BAG IT, BIN IT!STAFF at Western Power Distribution (WPD) based in Cornwall will be doing their bit towards the Clean Cornwall campaign. WPD is one of the latest business supporters of the campaign to tackle roadside litter which was identified as a priority by the Clean Cornwall Partnership in 2006. Brown paper bags distributed free at garage and petrol forecourts along the A30 and A38 encourage people to bag their rubbish and take it home to bin it or even recycle it. Mike Rogers, local Distribution Manager for WPD based in Bodmin said: "This is a really simple but effective way of making sure our wonderful county is kept clean and appealing to the visitors and locals alike. We have also distributed bags to our colleagues based in our Redruth office and hope it helps raise awareness of the impact litter causes in our community". James Staughton, Chairman of Clean Cornwall added: "For our campaign to be effective it is important local people living and working in the county contribute and take their rubbish home with them. I am pleased that we have signed up WPD to support our campaign and help us spread the message". Launceston LITTER Environmental Day - 22nd September 2009The LITTER Environmental Day, which coincides with the September 2009 Clean Cornwall Week was hailed a great success. This is an awareness day with many litter groups attending, and has grown bigger and bigger year on year. WEll done to all who contributed and roll on next year........ A number of litter picks have been planned for the future and if anyone would like to come along to show their support, please contact Jacki Ellis-Martin, Tel: 01566 774902 or e-mail jacki@glenkeller.co.uk Clean Cornwall WeekThere are a growing number of Clean Cornwall activities being developed across the county. The main focus at present is on Clean Cornwall Week and a calendar of litter picking events being held in September 2010. If you have any ideas or would like to help to organise your own event please let us know. Lots of Events have been held across the County since September 2007 and many of you heard about the Clean Cornwall Week on the radio, read about it in the papers or came along to join in with some of the pre-organised events. If your event is not yet listed, please speak to your event organiser and forward a brief report with any pictures that you may have of the event to the e-mail address on the right of this page Litter on RoadsLitter on the roadside is one of the biggest and most noticeable litter problems in Cornwall. Despite significant efforts by the local authorities, the problem persists..... it is particularly obvious in Spring when the grass verges are first cut. We need to address the cause of the problem, rather than just simply cleaning up the mess. Enforcement action is increasingly being used against offenders and new approaches are currently being developed to prevent/reduce littering. Cornwall Council and Clean Cornwall are now discussing the littering issues on the roads with the Highways Agency and great progress is starting to be made. Clean Cornwall are recognised in Environment Agency AwardsThe county's anti-litter campaign, Clean Cornwall, celebrated its first birthday in style last month by being honoured in the 3rd annual Communication Awards, held internally by the Environment Agency, the lead public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales. Since being formed in 2007 by a handful of public and private Cornish organisations with a passion to keep Cornwall beautiful, Clean Cornwall has gone from strength to strength and now boasts a number of achievements, which have put the county on the road to being litter-free. These successes include the formation and organisation of Clean Cornwall Week - a 'week' during which groups, businesses and individuals are encouraged to 'do their bit' and join in a litter pick to clear the Cornish landscape of rubbish. But Clean Cornwall isn't just about collecting litter, its vision is long term and based upon 'prevention is better than cure' campaigns to change the behaviour of those who drop litter in the first place. It is through these broad aims and successes that Clean Cornwall earned its place in the shortlist for the 'Best Campaign' category in the Environment Agency Awards. Over 91 entries were submitted across 12 award categories highlighting the work of the Environment Agency in a range of initiatives. Clean Cornwall was pipped to the post by a Floodline campaign based upon the high profile floods of last year. As one of the key players in setting up and running Clean Cornwall, the Environment Agency has been pivotal in its early success. Gitty Ankers, Senior Environment Officer for the Environment Agency comments: "The amount that Clean Cornwall has achieved in just one year is testament to the hard work and commitment of those organisations and volunteers who have given so much time to combating the issue of litter in Cornwall. It is fantastic that the Environment Agency Awards recognise the importance of Clean Cornwall and have highlighted the significant role that it plays in the future of Cornwall's environment." Clean Cornwall Chairman and Managing Director of St Austell Brewery, James Staughton, continues: "We have already seen Clean Cornwall flourish with numerous ideas and activities but our second year it set to be even bigger and better. As well as having Rick Stein as Patron we have a number of initiatives to help tackle the problem of litter such as the specially designed Clean Cornwall car litter bag created to reduce highway litter." THINK BEFORE YOU THROW - PLASTIC KILLSCornwall Waste Action (CWA), have launched a "Think Before Your Throw" poster campaign to highlight the danger to marine life of leaving plastic waste on beaches or throwing it into the sea. The poster, designed by Alana Griffiths from St Just School, was the winning entry in local schools poster design competition. It is being distributed throughout Cornwall to help raise awareness of the problem of plastic ending up in the sea. CWA Co-ordinator Guy Doncaster, says "Plastic litter dropped on beaches is a serious threat. Sea birds, fish and mammals such as dolphins, turtles and porpoises often get tangled in plastic, which can lead to starvation or drowning. Discarded plastic bags can be mistaken for food." Many marine animals that have been washed up dead on beaches are found to have stomachs blocked with plastic litter. Plastic bags are easily mistaken for jellyfish - a common prey for marine mammals. When CWA, with the help of 100 volunteers, cleaned and surveyed Marazion Beach in 2007, 60 kilos of rubbish were collected - 60% of which was plastic! Many people believe that most rubbish on beaches is washed ashore from fishing boats and other shipping but up to 44% is left behind by beach visitors. The Think Before You Throw poster campaign has been designed to encourage people to recycle their beach litter, take it home or at least put it in a rubbish bin. Hopefully if people realize the dangers to birds, fish, and marine mammals they will think twice before littering Cornish beaches with plastic and other litter. If you would like a paper of the A4 poster please contact CWA: info@wasteaction.org.uk, 01736 334684. This campaign is supported by West Cornwall Friends of the Earth, Clean Cornwall, The Environment Agency, CoaST and Leap Media. Litter SurveysA number of independent litter surveys have recently been undertaken to:
